Engineer Chiedza Masanganise, born in 1963 in Gutu, KwaBasera, is a groundbreaking civil engineer, academic leader, and advocate for gender equality in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

Her educational journey began at Makura Primary School in Gutu, followed by John Tallach High School in Ntabazinduna, Matabeleland North, where she completed her Ordinary Level. She later pursued higher education in Greece, and after five years of study, graduated from the University of Thessaloniki with a Master of Science in Civil Engineering, specialising in Water Reticulation Systems.

In 1989, Eng. Masanganise began her professional career as a Graduate Engineer with the Bulawayo City Council. Two years later, in 1991, she joined Bulawayo Polytechnic as the first and only female lecturer in the Civil Engineering Department. Her leadership potential quickly became evident, and by 1994, she was appointed Head of the Civil Engineering Department, a role in which she served with distinction.

Eng. Masanganise is a lifelong learner who has expanded her academic portfolio to include:
• Master of Science in Civil Engineering (University of Thessaloniki, Greece)
• Master of Education (Technical Education) – Zimbabwe Open University, 2002 (research focus: Gender Inequality in Technical and Vocational Education in Polytechnics)
• Master of Business Administration (National University of Science and Technology)
• Diploma in Technical and Vocational Education

She is also an active member of several professional and civic bodies, including the Zimbabwe Institute of Engineers, the NAMACO Construction Industry Subcommittee, and the Rotary Club. She became the inaugural Chairperson for the Bachelor of Technology in Water Resources Engineering at Bulawayo Polytechnic. She played a pivotal role in expanding the programme to attract students nationwide, ensuring its relevance to Zimbabwe’s water resource needs.

Her leadership trajectory continued, and in 2016, Eng. Masanganise was appointed substantive Vice Principal of Bulawayo Polytechnic, the first woman to hold this position. In September 2023, she broke another glass ceiling by becoming the first female Principal of Bulawayo Polytechnic since the institution’s establishment in 1927. In this role, she pioneered landmark events, including:

• 2023 – Hosting the first-ever International Research Conference by a Polytechnic in Zimbabwe, held at Holiday Inn Hotel in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
• 2024 – Hosting the second International Research Conference at Victoria Falls Sprayview Hotel in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
• March 2025 – Co-hosting the first Joint International Research and Innovation Conference with the University of Venda (South Africa) at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, the first such partnership between a Zimbabwean Polytechnic and an international university. Planning is already underway for the second edition of this joint conference, scheduled for March 2026 in Limpopo Province, South Africa.

Her leadership extends beyond Zimbabwe. In September 2024, during the Association of Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Africa (ATUPA) Research Conference in Kenya, she was appointed Regional Gender Representative for Southern and Central Africa.

As a researcher, Eng. Masanganise has contributed to scholarly work, including: Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of Students towards Their Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights in Tertiary Institutions: A Case Study of Bulawayo Polytechnic, published in the International Journal for Innovative Research and Development

With over thirty-four (34) years of service to Bulawayo Polytechnic, Eng. Masanganise’s career reflects a commitment to academic excellence, gender empowerment, and innovation in TVET. She is blessed with three children and continues to inspire future generations through her leadership and dedication.
